Forest and Trees posted by Dave E Martin @ Tue, 02 Dec 2008 20:37:47 -0000

I’m wondering if the HI diagram on page 81 should still “work” if you know about it? I’m curious about what others’ experience is with it. I always see a large H made of little I’s (and I also think of an iron I-Beam), no matter which eye I look at it with or how quickly.

But, I wonder if thats because I know about it, or I looked at it with both eyes first, or if I’m really one of the “cooperative” (for lack of a term at the moment) even though I am by no means a math prodigy.

Generational Affinity posted by Ned Hogan @ Fri, 28 Nov 2008 18:16:05 -0000

I found chapter 5 fascinating. As the oldest of 8, I am in theory a Prophet. I tend toward the Nomad as I was born on the Boomer side of the cusp. My wife is in theory a Xer, but born on the cusp, she is the youngest of her 5 siblings. I wonder if anyone has done any studies in this regard. My wife tends to be more of a Boomer and I tend to be more of an Xer. The influence by her older siblings must of made an impact on her and the influence of my younger siblings must of made an impact on me.

Great book!

In Chapter 2 the reference to the nurses case study seems redundant posted by Peter Prokein @ Wed, 26 Nov 2008 07:31:22 -0000

I just came across the book today, downloaded the sample pages, and I have to agree that there’s what appears to be quite some filler fluff in the pages that I have seen so far. Between the nurses and the cooks, and repetitions on how experts differ from novices, I was quite disappointed.

I own a few books by Pragmatic Programmers, and the titles I own didn’t disappoint, so it was surprising to see what appears to be a departure from content in favor of filler. That also makes the glowing reviews of the book (presented as quotes) look odd.

Would love to hear what others who have read the whole book have to say about the “signal to noise” ratio.

Is mind a thing or abstraction? posted by Yuli Vasiliev @ Sat, 15 Nov 2008 09:17:09 -0000

Brains and mind are like hardware and software respectively. If you have a computer with software running on it, does that mean the computer is a thing but software is an abstraction, not a real thing? Okay. We used to think that a thing is something that can be seen, touched, and so on.

However, the scope of our organs of sense is limited. The ability of the instrumentation we use to see more is limited too. And the main problem is that the way in which we tend to cognize the world around us is also limited. It’s hardly our fault, though. We are what we are – not less but not more.

Mind is definitely one of those things that are mostly beyond our understanding. Probably that’s why Andy reckons it among abstractions. But any abstraction is a product of our mind. Can an abstraction produce an abstraction? At first glance, it seems possible – often, one theory is based on another one and so on. However, facing the truth, such a chain of abstractions is nothing but product of our mind in the first place. Only real things can produce something, including abstractions. Abstractions in turn are always products of, well, real things.

Artists and other weirdos posted by Courtney Nielsen @ Mon, 21 Jul 2008 16:20:16 -0000

Hi there, I’m an “r-mode” type (and the son of a 60’s-era psychotherapist) that picked up this book with intense curiosity. I am about 60 pages into it (as shown in the title of this thread) but wondering if its a book mainly aimed at L-mode types looking to utilize their R-mode more. But how about the opposite? Is this a book worth reading for those artist & weirdo types who are trying to be better at their L-mode? Im the ‘visual designer’ at a startup amongst an army of L-types, and they’re giving me grief for not seeing things the way they do ( I could say the same, but I am outnumbered).

Thanks, quite a good read anyways and I intend on finishing it.

We do use spell check, but of course for various reasons mistakes do creep in. That’s why we use professional copy editors upon publication. Without them, Beta versions will necessarily be a little rough around the edges.

I want to suggest that writers do a spell and grammar check on their word processor before releasing a new beta version. Some of the errors can easily be rectified by using automated check. Examples like repeated words such as “the the”. If automated check procedure is in place, then readers can help by focusing now on the more serious errors..
