Well, I’ve been away from Rails for quite some time and decided to finally get back to it over the holiday weekend and temporarily ‘lost my mind’ and updated to the latest greatest Rails 2.2 not thinking about my tome here that I intended to following along like a lost puppy.

Is my haste going to make life difficult here for me to follow along in this current beta state?

Very much a newbie, and sorry if this is answered elsewhere (I did look around a bit), but is there something odd at this point in the book, or am I just missing something fundamental? After running generate the discussion of the line_item migration discusses the “foreign keys” in this table, referencing the “orders” and “products” tables. And the demo code shows these fields and keys commented out, as thought they were there in the generated code, to be replaced by the non-foreign key code below.

My code showed nothing of the sort, furthermore, I do not see how it would be expected to be so, the generate command had merely a set of fields with associated data type:

ruby script/generate scaffold line_item product_id:integer order_id:integer quantity:integer total_price:decimal

There is nothing in this statement to indicate any relationship between these columns and any other table, right? What am I missing, or is this a typo?

That means there are still 90 days to edit Rails 2.2 missing features with more details.

Hey everyone,

This might be something simple as I am very new to Ruby and Rails but on Page 62 of the new edition pdf of agile rails development I am attempting the Playtime section. I place the @files = Dir.glob(’*’) in the say controller as well as the follow up code in my .html.erb.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be working. I tried what was mentioned on the wiki (in the book) but it didn’t work? Any Suggestions?

Hi,
On page 507 there is an example (as shown above) of how to use collection_select as a means of associating linked tables when editing/updating a record

I have a category that belongs to catalogues and am trying to use this method to pick the catalogue that the category belongs to when creating/editing a category record.

I am totally unable to get this method to work in as outlined in the book. I get the selection list populated with the correct data but am getting the following error when submitting the form to create a new record.

NoMethodError in Categories#create

You have a nil object when you didn’t expect it!
You might have expected an instance of Array.
The error occurred while evaluating nil.map

My view looks like this. (This is a rendered template(Not a partial) used for both editing and creating category records)

Hi all

I am trying task G in B1.6 and I am having trouble getting the builder template to work correctly. When the who_bought.xml.builder template is called, I get

undefined local variable or method `xml’ for #<actionview::base:0x34fc04c>

My understanding is that the “xml” variable is auto-magically created for you if the template is named ”.xml.builder” (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Base.html). I have copied the code directly from the PDF. I have run “gem install builder”. I added what I thought to be missing “require ‘builder’” statements to the info controller. No luck. Any help?

I can’t imagine why you’d do this based on price. Here’s one way that should work.

In your cart model:


  def remove_item(product)
    @items.delete_if { |item| item.product == product }
  end

In your cart controller:


  def remove_item
    @cart = find_cart
    if param_posted?(:id)
      product = Product.find(params[:id])
      @cart.remove_item(product)
      if @cart.items.size > 0
        index
      else
        empty_cart
      end
    end
  end

I saw a blog to say to do it this way:

def remove_product(pricing)
@items.delete_if { |item| item.pricing == pricing }
end

But the problem with that is if you have multiple cart items with the same price, can’t you remove the wrong one?

Anyone have a solid way to do remove individual cart items?

I founde the solution in routes.rb

Of course I dont`t want a RESTful interface for both controllers, but for one of them, the admin/users_controller.

like the cenario on p.253, I have a seperate admin controller-group. For, for example users, I`ve got another controller (users_controller), wich is not part of that group.
I want to use RESTful Interfaces to access those controllers. How can I do the map.resource for both, the admin/users_controller and the users_controller.
It is because i want to use handy things like


<%= link_to 'Back', roles_path %>

Any suggestions?

Not sure if this is the place for voicing this, but yes… Rails would really do well to look more seriously into supporting jQuery out of the box. Prototype and Scriptaculous are dinosaurs now. It seems obvious to me that there is much more movement in the jQuery framework. From a performance standpoint, jQuery consistently beats out nearly everything else. The documentation for Prototype is sparse and very often outdated. Scriptaculous effects are often jumpy and buggy.

Let’s keep with the times here Rails!

I thought I was doing well with D1, and then I started getting these errors when I click buttons:

I’m feeling really stupid, I’ve got all the way to “Finishing Up” pg 191, done the rake doc:app, but I don’t know how to show it in my browser.

We do have an option to regenerate the PDF—just log into your account and regenerate it from the sidebar :)

We find that most download issues are due to firewall policies. Normally people find that moving from behind a firewall fixes any problems.

When I bought the book I had a few issues with downloading.
I had a firewall blocking downloads
The server seemed to be struggling at one point
the pdf had not been generated properly.

You should have an option to re-generate the pdf file then try to download again
What tends to happen is the file opens up rather than downloads into a pdf reader. Do you have one installed?

The pdf reader has a save button that allows you to save the file to your HD.
