I just figured it out – the .xml.builder file was saved as UTF-8 rather than ASCII.

Will 2.2 install blowup Examples in current Beta? posted by Bob McCormick @ Wed, 26 Nov 2008 06:27:57 -0000

Well, I’ve been away from Rails for quite some time and decided to finally get back to it over the holiday weekend and temporarily ‘lost my mind’ and updated to the latest greatest Rails 2.2 not thinking about my tome here that I intended to following along like a lost puppy.

Is my haste going to make life difficult here for me to follow along in this current beta state?

Thanks and looking forward to getting into this.

Best regards…Bob

line of code missing on page 143 posted by Ron Gainey @ Wed, 26 Nov 2008 00:37:12 -0000

Very much a newbie, and sorry if this is answered elsewhere (I did look around a bit), but is there something odd at this point in the book, or am I just missing something fundamental? After running generate the discussion of the line_item migration discusses the “foreign keys” in this table, referencing the “orders” and “products” tables. And the demo code shows these fields and keys commented out, as thought they were there in the generated code, to be replaced by the non-foreign key code below.

My code showed nothing of the sort, furthermore, I do not see how it would be expected to be so, the generate command had merely a set of fields with associated data type:

ruby script/generate scaffold line_item product_id:integer order_id:integer quantity:integer total_price:decimal

There is nothing in this statement to indicate any relationship between these columns and any other table, right? What am I missing, or is this a typo?

Sam’s working hard on upgrading the book to 2.2. We’ll release a beta once it is ready, then probably one more beta before we go to press. We’ll announce the final print date once we know it.

Rails 2.2 is now officially out today and this edition is yet to come out in march 2009.

That means there are still 90 days to edit Rails 2.2 missing features with more details.

Hey everyone,

This might be something simple as I am very new to Ruby and Rails but on Page 62 of the new edition pdf of agile rails development I am attempting the Playtime section. I place the @files = Dir.glob(’*’) in the say controller as well as the follow up code in my .html.erb.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be working. I tried what was mentioned on the wiki (in the book) but it didn’t work? Any Suggestions?

p.507 collection_select example doesn't work for me. posted by James West @ Mon, 17 Nov 2008 23:06:11 -0000

<%=
  @users = User.find(:all, :order => "name" )
  form.collection_select(:name, @users, :id, :name)
%>

Hi,
On page 507 there is an example (as shown above) of how to use collection_select as a means of associating linked tables when editing/updating a record

I have a category that belongs to catalogues and am trying to use this method to pick the catalogue that the category belongs to when creating/editing a category record.

I am totally unable to get this method to work in as outlined in the book. I get the selection list populated with the correct data but am getting the following error when submitting the form to create a new record.

NoMethodError in Categories#create

You have a nil object when you didn’t expect it!
You might have expected an instance of Array.
The error occurred while evaluating nil.map

My view looks like this. (This is a rendered template(Not a partial) used for both editing and creating category records)

  <legend>Enter Catalogue Details</legend>
          <p>
            <%= f.label :catalogue_name -%>:
            <%= f.collection_select(:category_name, @catalogues, :id, :name)%>
          </p>
          <p>
            <%= f.label :category_name -%>:
            <%= f.text_field :category_name %>
        </p>
          <p>
            <%= f.label :category_description -%>:
            <%= f.text_area :category_description, :rows => 2, :cols => 40 %>
        </p>
          <p>
            <%= f.label :category_image_url -%>:
            <%= f.text_field :category_image_url %>
        </p>

The relevant parts of my controller look like this

  # GET /categories/new
  # GET /categories/new.xml
  def new
    @category = Category.new
    @catalogues = Catalogue.get_all_catalogues
    respond_to do |format|
      format.html # new.html.erb
      format.xml  { render :xml => @category }
    end
  end

  # GET /categories/1/edit
  def edit
    @category = Category.find(params[:id])
    @catalogues = Catalogue.get_all_catalogues
  end

  # POST /categories
  # POST /categories.xml
  def create
    @category = Category.new(params[:category])

    respond_to do |format|
      if @category.save
        flash[:notice] = 'Category was successfully created.'
        format.html { redirect_to(@category) }
        format.xml  { render :xml => @category, :status => :created, :location => @category }
      else
        format.html { render :action => "new" }
        format.xml  { render :xml => @category.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity }
      end
    end
  end

  # PUT /categories/1
  # PUT /categories/1.xml
  def update
    @category = Category.find(params[:id])

    respond_to do |format|
      if @category.update_attributes(params[:category])
        flash[:notice] = 'Category was successfully updated.'
        format.html { redirect_to(@category) }
        format.xml  { head :ok }
      else
        format.html { render :action => "edit" }
        format.xml  { render :xml => @category.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity }
      end
    end
  end

The category model looks like this and all validation passes

class Category < ActiveRecord::Base
  belongs_to :catalogues
  has_many :products

  validates_presence_of :category_name

                                  'or PNG image.'

end

The catalogue model looks like this

class Catalogue < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :categories
  validates_presence_of :name
  validates_uniqueness_of :name
  validates_format_of :thumbnail_url,
                      :with    => %r{\.(gif|jpg|png)$}i,
                      :unless => Proc.new{|c| c.thumbnail_url.blank?},
                      :message => 'must be a URL for GIF, JPG ' +
                                  'or PNG image.'

  def self.get_live_catalogues
    @catalogues = self.find_all_by_available_to_sell(true)
  end

  def self.get_all_catalogues
    @catalogues = self.find(:all, :order => "name")
  end
end

Is this a bug that needs reporting as errata or is it just me being an a**e and getting something wrong?

Hi all

I am trying task G in B1.6 and I am having trouble getting the builder template to work correctly. When the who_bought.xml.builder template is called, I get

undefined local variable or method `xml’ for #<actionview::base:0x34fc04c>

My understanding is that the “xml” variable is auto-magically created for you if the template is named ”.xml.builder” (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Base.html). I have copied the code directly from the PDF. I have run “gem install builder”. I added what I thought to be missing “require ‘builder’” statements to the info controller. No luck. Any help?

How would you delete individual cart items? posted by Tom Monaghan @ Sun, 16 Nov 2008 21:50:19 -0000

Andrew,

I can’t imagine why you’d do this based on price. Here’s one way that should work.

In your cart model:

  def remove_item(product)
    @items.delete_if { |item| item.product == product }
  end

In your cart controller:

  def remove_item
    @cart = find_cart
    if param_posted?(:id)
      product = Product.find(params[:id])
      @cart.remove_item(product)
      if @cart.items.size > 0
        index
      else
        empty_cart
      end
    end
  end

Best,
Tom

I saw a blog to say to do it this way:

def remove_product(pricing)
@items.delete_if { |item| item.pricing == pricing }
end

But the problem with that is if you have multiple cart items with the same price, can’t you remove the wrong one?

Anyone have a solid way to do remove individual cart items?

RESTful with grouped controllers posted by Christoph Ossner @ Wed, 12 Nov 2008 19:39:03 -0000

A change in the question:

Of course I dont`t want a RESTful interface for both controllers, but for one of them, the admin/users_controller.
If i write to routes.rb

map.resources :users, :controller => '/admin/users'

I can`t access the functions of users_controller anymore, since everything will be routed to admin/

RESTful with grouped controllers posted by Christoph Ossner @ Wed, 12 Nov 2008 18:02:53 -0000

Hello,

like the cenario on p.253, I have a seperate admin controller-group. For, for example users, I`ve got another controller (users_controller), wich is not part of that group.
I want to use RESTful Interfaces to access those controllers. How can I do the map.resource for both, the admin/users_controller and the users_controller.
It is because i want to use handy things like

<%= link_to 'Back', roles_path %>

Any suggestions?

jquery posted by Jeremy Ricketts @ Wed, 12 Nov 2008 06:29:58 -0000

Not sure if this is the place for voicing this, but yes… Rails would really do well to look more seriously into supporting jQuery out of the box. Prototype and Scriptaculous are dinosaurs now. It seems obvious to me that there is much more movement in the jQuery framework. From a performance standpoint, jQuery consistently beats out nearly everything else. The documentation for Prototype is sparse and very often outdated. Scriptaculous effects are often jumpy and buggy.

Let’s keep with the times here Rails!

I thought I was doing well with D1, and then I started getting these errors when I click buttons:

Unknown action

No action responded to #<Cart:0x11fb2e0>. Actions: add_to_cart, empty_cart, and index

Yet the actions seem to happen! I wonder if you and I in similar places where something is a tiny bit off.

When I use : http://localhost:8080/depot/doc/app

I get the following error:

Routing Error

No route matches ”/doc/app” with {:method=>:get}

I’m guessing I need to do something in routes.rb, but I need some HELP . . . please.

We do have an option to regenerate the PDF—just log into your account and regenerate it from the sidebar :)

We find that most download issues are due to firewall policies. Normally people find that moving from behind a firewall fixes any problems.

Can't Seem to download the PDF posted by James West @ Sat, 08 Nov 2008 23:37:12 -0000

When I bought the book I had a few issues with downloading.
I had a firewall blocking downloads
The server seemed to be struggling at one point
the pdf had not been generated properly.

You should have an option to re-generate the pdf file then try to download again
What tends to happen is the file opens up rather than downloads into a pdf reader. Do you have one installed?

The pdf reader has a save button that allows you to save the file to your HD.

HTH
