Possible Episode 7? posted by Bill Dudney @ Wed, 15 Oct 2008 12:48:49 -0000

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your interest!

I am planning on doing another episode for this series that takes you through porting to the phone. I will likely also do a similar series on doing other 3D effects with CA on the phone.

My current plan is to get started on these screen casts the first week in November, delivery on the site takes some time so I can’t speculate on release dates.

I was wondering if someone could talk on the steps one would have to go to to port these examples to the iPhone.
Biggest differences, etc…?

I’m able to get the examples running after a few workarounds but the first example in particular crashes upon start-up.

Grrrr, plagued by tech problems this week in getting the screencast done. I have it all worked out now and the code written so I’m hoping to get the recording done this weekend. I will post back here as soon as I’m done. Thx again!

So sorry that I’m so late! I got hammered with several projects at once and this one is the one that suffered. I’m hoping to complete the recording this week so it should show up shortly after that depending on our post prod people’s schedule.

Thanks for the kind words!

Hi Bill,

This line wasn’t visible on the screen in your first video. can you explain the logic behind calculating row bytes? In the online examples I’ve located different algorithms seem to be used.

Any thoughts on Ruby Core Animation Video posted by dan sinclair @ Mon, 07 Jul 2008 17:40:06 -0000

As a suggestion, once the Coverflow application is done, it would be nice to get an example of doing something similar in RubyCocoa.

While RubyCocoa isn’t too difficult to figure out, there are always a few gotchas lurking under the hood. Would be nice to have a screencast that can give some information around the process of porting the coverflow application (or any application for that matter).

Stage 4 Sample Code posted by David Rutgos @ Fri, 04 Jul 2008 00:56:30 -0000

Hi,

I just purchased the core animation episodes 1 through 4 and of course I couldn’t wait to see the episodes first before running the samples and it looks like stage 4 isn’t the cover flow application that I thought it was going to be. I’m assuming I’m doing something wrong and so I will touch base again after watching all four episodes. However, if you have a moment can you take a quick look? Thanks! Basically I was expecting to see the images in stage four look the same way as in the 3 minute intro that I watched before buying the episodes.

Thanks and have a great 4th of July!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the quick reply.
The bit that really suffers is about 28 seconds into the free preview video, when you’re flicking between photos in the CoverFlow-style view. Pulling up the inspector in QuickTime shows a frame rate of ~3FPS at that point in the video.

Is the preview video encoded at a lower frame rate than the actual episodes?

Hi David,

The framerate on the videos is currently 15 fps.

We spent a lot of time debating and trying various framereates and 15 seemed like a good compromise. When I was reviewing them before pushing I figured that the fps was enough for you to see the effect.

Is there some part of one of the episodes in particular that fails to illustrate the effect? Maybe there is something we could tweak that section (or sections) in the post prod phase to make that better. We’d be glad to try it out.

Thanks for the kind words and for letting me know.

Thanks for producing these, they’re going to be a great companion to the book.
However, I watched the sample 3-minute screencast and I’ve got to ask: Do all of the screencasts have such low framerates? I can understand that you want to keep the file size low without introducing too many compression artifacts on each frame, but doesn’t illustrating a smooth animation with a 3FPS video kind of miss the point?
