Hi All,

Thanks for checking out the Core Animation screencast. I’m really excited about this new way to deliver content. This is a whole new way to explore Core Animation together. I’m really looking forward to it!

If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them here.

Happy Viewing,

Thanks for producing these, they’re going to be a great companion to the book.
However, I watched the sample 3-minute screencast and I’ve got to ask: Do all of the screencasts have such low framerates? I can understand that you want to keep the file size low without introducing too many compression artifacts on each frame, but doesn’t illustrating a smooth animation with a 3FPS video kind of miss the point?

Hi David,

The framerate on the videos is currently 15 fps.

We spent a lot of time debating and trying various framereates and 15 seemed like a good compromise. When I was reviewing them before pushing I figured that the fps was enough for you to see the effect.

Is there some part of one of the episodes in particular that fails to illustrate the effect? Maybe there is something we could tweak that section (or sections) in the post prod phase to make that better. We’d be glad to try it out.

Thanks for the kind words and for letting me know.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the quick reply.
The bit that really suffers is about 28 seconds into the free preview video, when you’re flicking between photos in the CoverFlow-style view. Pulling up the inspector in QuickTime shows a frame rate of ~3FPS at that point in the video.

Is the preview video encoded at a lower frame rate than the actual episodes?

David: Thanks for letting us know about this. I’ve remastered the sample video at a higher frame rate and using H.264 to decrease the file size significantly.

Please let me know if you notice any other frame rate problems.

Thanks again!

Mike

It would be nice to have these in HD so that I could have it fill my screen on the cinema displays
